is the VPN service in China dead?
In the past 2 month, the Great Fire Wall of China is going mad, it blocked almost every VPN provider’s service. the following is the details for each VPN protocal
OpenVPN has two secure modes, one based on SSL/TLS security using RSA certificates and keys, the other using a pre-shared static key. and OpenVPN can use 2 types of ports, TCP port and UDP port. most of OpenVPN build with RSA secure mode, at this moment in China. the fact is :
1,) under the RSA secure, UDP port is useless, the wall can detect and block the UDP ports in a few hours. TCP port works , i haven’t see the block of TCP ports.
2,) under the pre-shared static key secure mode, UDP and TCP ports works fine.
please attention, DO NOT USE THE SAME PORT FOR YOUR UDP AND TCP PORT
SSH tunnel service works fine in China, but if you do not use obfuscation key, the normal SSH connection may be disturbed by the wall some times
Cisco IPSec VPN service is working good in China at this moment
PPTP is controllable, so PPTP is working, but once the wall detected your traffic is “illegal”, it will cut you off. my advice is DO NOT use PPTP in China
L2TP VPN service is NOT working in China, you can connect to the VPN server, but it can not load any site for you.
SSTP VPN is working, but it only for Windows Vista and up
So, in general, only Cisco and SSH service working fine in China right now. the other 3 VPN types are unstable or can not use in China. if you are in China, i highly recommend you find a local private VPN service provider. julyrush.com is the one i know who based in China and offer English service, you can check it out
